June McClain at Kolob Canyon, near St. George, Utah.

For those of you who know June McClain, she recently sent a letter to me to be shared with the members, along with a photo. I'll post both on the bulletin board, for those who don't have computers.

June reports that she is busy going on bus trips to scenic sights around St. George, playing Bingo, and going out to lunch. She enjoys visitors, and receiving cards and letters. She moved to a new apartment, but is still in the same complex. Her new address is: 134 W. 2025 S #126, Saint George, Utah 84770.

Members Assigned New GHIN Handicap Numbers

As of December 1, 2008 all regular members who have paid their dues have been assigned GHIN
(Golf Handicap Information Network) numbers which will be used from this date forward for posting scores. There is no need to post to the Pub Links computer unless you belong to a Pub Links club such as Chalk Mountain or Morro Bay. If this applies, you may continue to post on the Pub Links computer until January 1. After that date the computer at Paso will be disabled. You can have your Pub Links handicap number linked to your GHIN number so that scores posted at Paso will be transferred to your Pub Links club. This is probably as clear as mud, so if you have any questions you can call Clare, Jean Hayward or Pat Gabler.
Happy Golfing!

Christmas Party

Don't forget to sign up for the annual Christmas Party/Luncheon which will be held on Friday, December 19th. We will be collecting donations to our local Food Bank, and/or an Animal humane society, so bring some extra $$ to donate to the charity of your choice (or both!)

DECEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

A Note From Our Prez
December already! Only a few weeks left in 2008 and the end of my first year as President. I want to sincerely thank all of you for everything you have done to help me learn how to do this job. It has truly been a fun year but I couldn't have done it without your help!

Moving forward we have some fun golf to look forward to this month. The first Tuesday, December 2nd, is Ace of the Month and your last chance to qualify for Ace of the Year playoffs on December 9th. Don't forget the Christmas Party on the 19th. Our dining room will be decked in Christmas tradition, thanks to Kay, Pam and Sally. We will congratulate Ace of the Year, Player of the Year, Most Improved Player for 2008 and everyone who won birdies and chip-ins during the year. This year Christmas cash donations will go to our local Food Bank and/or Woods Humane Society Animal Shelter.
The December Board meeting kicked off some planning for the 2009 Grape Escape and early planning for the year ahead. I'm looking forward to a great New Year!

Merry Christmas to All!

SLO County Women's Tournament

There was a very nice article in the Friday, Nov. 14 Paso Robles Press about the SLO County Women's Tournament, plus an interview with our very own Jayne Donkin, who, by the way, was the very first Champion in 1979, and has played in every tournament since! Amazing.

NOVEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

A Note from Our Prez
November and leaves are turning colors, spicy smells are in the air and it's my favorite month for golf. Our weather is beautiful and it always feels to me like a reprieve both from our hot summer days and the still not too cold days. I know this will change soon so I want to play as much as possible before the scarves and mittens come out of my bag.

November and the clocks get turned back, we get another chance at Ace of the Month, and our SLO County Tournament is November 6 - 7 with rain dates November 13 - 14. Then Thanksgiving and the holidays begin.

See you on the tee!

Battle of the Sexes - September 26

It seems that the guys won 9 to 7. We'll get 'em next year!

October Newsletter

We're trying something new - no separate email newsletter - everything will be on the blog. There will be paper copies in the pro shop as well for those who don't have computers.

OCTOBER 2008 NEWSLETTER
A Note from Our Prez
October opens the door to cooler weather (YEAH) and the beginning of a beautiful color change in Paso Robles. It also brings us to the 80's Ladies Tournament on October 21st. The sign-up sheet for this event will be at the check-in desk in the Pro Shop beginning October 7th. As a reminder, 80's ladies, please do not sign up on the regular sign-up sheet for that Tuesday. Your $3 game fee will be in a separate pot for this tournament's award money. You will, however, be eligible for Closest to the Pin in the regular game if you want to participate. I have selected a fun format for this tournament and planned lots of treats. Don't miss out on your special tournament!
You 2009 Club membership dues ($65) should be submitted to Jean Hayward by mid-November.
We will have course raters at Paso Robles October 17th. They will be re-certifying our course rating and, if necessary due to course changes (tree removals, etc.), making necessary amendments. These raters will not be looking at our handicap allocation. Once we have been re-rated, we will make any necessary changes to our hole-by-hole handicap allocation.
The deadline for the County Championship sign-up is October 31st. Our Club participation is important this year since we are the hosts. Clare Shaffer and Jean Hayward, along with the entire committee are working very hard to make our Club proud and appreciate any and all support from our membership!
Please remember to read the Board's proposed By-Law amendment posted on the bulletin board in the Pro Shop. You will remember my discussion regarding the importance of this By-Law change at our General Meeting and Elections September 2nd. We will be voting as a Club on this at the next General Meeting October 28th. By the way, don't forget to sign up for the luncheon on the 28th - sign up sheet is on the board.
Get well wishes to Jayne Donkin. We miss you Jayne, but hear you're back to playing bridge, so we're hopeful it won't be too much longer before we see you on the course again. And ditto to Cyndi Bergin, much missed VP sidekick. Come back soon. I promise to do the "heavy lifting".
See you on the Tee!
Maureen

The September Newsletter will be available for pickup on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Or, if you are on the email list, you will receive it Sunday evening.

Change to Pacific Women's Golf Association by Clare Shaffer

As you all know, we will be changing to the Pacific Women's Golf Association on January 1, 2009. Jean Hayward and I are already strategizing on how to convert everyone's handicap index to the GHIN system. Those of you who already have a GHIN number by virtue of being a member of the Roving Rascals and/or Hunter Ranch will keep that handicap. We won't be converting your PubLinks handicap since you already have one on the GHIN system. As a result, in order for your GHIN handicap to be accurate, you must continue to post your scores to the GHIN system every time you play. I've compared everyone's GHIN handicap to PubLinks and they are acceptably comparable with just a few exceptions. So however manner you're getting your scores to the GHIN system, keep on doing it. If you have any questions, please talk to me or Jean Hayward.

Golf Quotes

THERE ARE TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR HEAD DOWN - PLAY GOLF AND PRAY.- Lee Trevino

A LITTLE GIRL WAS AT HER FIRST GOLF LESSON WHEN SHE ASKED AN INTERESTING QUESTION: 'IS THE WORD SPELLED P-U-T OR P-U-T-T?' SHE ASKED THE INSTRUCTOR. 'P-U-T-T IS CORRECT,' HE REPLIED. 'PUT MEANS TO PLACE A THING WHERE YOU WANT IT. PUTT MEANS MERELY A VAIN ATTEMPT TO DO THE SAME THING.'

THE ONLY THING IN MY BAG THAT WORKS IS THE BUG SPRAY.- Bruce Lansky

GOLF IS A GAME IN WHICH THE SLOWEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ARE THOSE IN FRONT OF YOU, AND THE FASTEST ARE THOSE BEHIND.

I'VE HAD A GOOD DAY WHEN I DON'T FALL OUT OF THE CART.- Buddy Hackett

RELAX? HOW CAN ANYBODY RELAX AND PLAY GOLF? YOU HAVE TO GRIP THE CLUB, DON'T YOU? - Ben Hogan

I FOUND OUT THAT ALL THE IMPORTANT LESSONS OF LIFE ARE CONTAINED IN THE THREE RULES FOR ACHIEVING A PERFECT GOLF SWING: 1. KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN.2. FOLLOW THROUGH.3. BE BORN WITH MONEY

YOU CAN MAKE A LOT OF MONEY IN THIS GAME. JUST ASK MY EX WIVES. BOTH OF THEM ARE SO RICH THAT NEITHER OF THEIR HUSBANDS WORK.

Couples Tournament - June 22

Jeff Weidler reports on the Couples Tournament on June 22nd.

Whack and Hack Couples Tournament hosted by Jeff & Suzanne Weidler - a fun format using the low and high net of the 4 person team added together on each hole with one exception. If there was a net birdie, then add the 2 low nets.

The winners had a net birdie on all but one hole. It was our biggest turnout for the couples tournament this year - 40 participants.

1st place with a 119 total: the speediest group on the course - Fred & Sue Edmundson and Tom & Cindi Bergin ($200)

2nd place with a 125 total: the high handicappers of Don Lipp, Jane Villafana, Jack & Josie Warner ($120)

3rd place with a 127 total: the sandbagging crew of John & Grace Bergin and Ray (the double popper) & Chris Anselmi ($80)

and 2nd place Linda McCornack 13'1" ($7)

This and That

Here are some items that got left out of the newsletter.

Pam Finley wanted everyone to know that her husband, Bob, trimmed the tree on #13 so we have a better chance of getting our ball on the green! Thank you, Bob. That tree has gobbled up a lot of my drives!

Donna Ferguson chatted with Jayne Donkin last week and discovered that she had to go down to Burbank to get an "adjustment" on her pacemaker! She's doing fine now and will be back to playing golf in a month.

And, we have a new member - Josette Warner.

If anyone has anything for the blog, just let me know!

Caddy Humor

These are the Top 5 Caddy Replies:

Golfer: "Think I'm going to drown in the lake."
Caddy: "Think you can keep you head down that long."

Golfer: "I'd move Heaven and Earth to break a 100 on this course."
Caddy: "Try Heaven, you've already moved most of the Earth."

Golfer: "Do you think my game is improving?"
Caddy: "Yes sir, you miss the ball much closer now."

Golfer: "Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?"
Caddy: "Eventually."

Golfer: "You've got to be the worst caddy in the world."
Caddy: "I don't think so sir. That would be too much of a coincidence."

Golfisms

Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.

When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.

If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.

The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about your golf swing.

No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse

The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all of your many other errors.

If it ain't broke, try changing your grip.

Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot.

A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponents' luck.

It is surprisingly easy to hole a fifty-foot putt... for an 8.

Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

It's not a gimme if you're still away.

The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree.

There are two kinds of bounces; unfair bounces and bounces just the way you meant to play it.

You can hit a two-acre fairway 10% of the time and a two-inch branch 90% of the time.

If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age.

Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.

When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.

Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

If you want to hit a 7 iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.

There are two things you can learn by stopping your back-swing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.

Hazards attract, fairways repel.

You can put a draw on the ball, you can put a fade on the ball, but no golfer can put a straight on the ball.

A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.

If there is a ball on the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker; if both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint.

It's easier to get up at 6:00 AM to play golf than at 10:00 to mow the yard.

A good drive on the 18th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game.

Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you always end up having to pray a lot.

If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he shot a six or a seven, he probably shot an eight.
