Handicap Review

Pat Gabler, our handicap chairperson, thought that our members should be aware of some problems that are occuring when posting their scores. According to Pat......

"I just finished the handicap review for the past 30 days. I thought it would be interesting for the ladies to see the numbers.

I really would like to see more compliance in posting and turning in cards. Closer to only 5 to reenter would sure be easier for me :-)

185 rounds played by ladies at Paso Robles
43 scores posted with no cards
12 rounds needing to be entered or reentered--(one member posted a 162 for herself instead of 124"

Drive for Show, Putt for Dough

If you three putt, you pay the pink pig every week. Over the course of a year, this little piggy gets very fat, so in June we take the proceeds and throw a party. This year, Rene'e Rahilly opened her lovely house for the eagerly awaited "Pink Pig Party"! We had lots of good food catered by Cahoots, and enjoyed visiting, soaking in the hot tub, and a spirited game or two of Catch Phrase. The following video shows some of the party.

Third Annual NCGA Women's Only Member Outing

The Third Annual NCGA Women’s Only Member Outing is just around the corner and you and three guests are invited to participate! The past two year’s events have sold out so don’t miss your opportunity to play.

This year’s event is being held on Monday, July 13 at Almaden Country Club in San Jose. Open to women of the NCGA, WGANC and PWGA.

Cost for this event is $135 and will include green fees, cart, range balls, a prize fund contribution, tee prize as well as a lunch hosted by the club. The shotgun start is at 12:00 p.m. and format is Modified Net Stableford.

Players will be separated into flights based off of their course handicap and prizes will be awarded to the top individuals in each flight. With the Modified Net Stableford format each lady will play her own ball and earn points for each bogey, par, birdie or better. The player with the most points will be declared the winner.

When filling out the registration form, be sure to indicate which of your friends you would like to play with. Don’t have anyone to bring? Not a problem, you will be paired with ladies of similar handicap indexes so you can all enjoy each others company.

Registration closes on July 3. You may register online through the Almaden Country Club link.

If you have questions, contact Alison White, awhite@ncga.org or Clare Shaffer.

Message from the Prez

Dear Ladies,

Well....we're officially at the mid-year mark. June -- the month for weddings, graduations, family vacations (oops here come the grandkids!) AND we still find time to squeeze in our beloved golf. This also brings us to our last month of "official" golf and ushers in The Ringer. Be sure and sign up for our ever-fantastic Summer Ringer which starts Wednesday, July 1st and ends August 31st.

Our ever-favorite Pink Pig Party is June 23rd after golf. Rene'e Rahilly has generously offered her gorgeous home again for the event. Thanks Rene'e! Be sure and sign up so we can get a headcount for our lunch.

DAnna is going to be taking a much earned vacation during the summer months and will be back to her Newsletter in early September.

Our Grape Escape was very successful and hopefully everyone had a good day. There are a few hat clips (this year's tee prize) available for sale if anyone would like one.

I'll see you on the tee!

9 Words Women Use

(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' ... that will bring on a 'whatever').

(8) Whatever: Is a women's way of saying up yours!

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to #3. *

Message from the Prez

Dear Ladies --
Here we are in "the merry, merry month of May"! And that means our 2009 Grape Escape on May 15th is almost here. I hope everyone who can play has signed up. I promise next year I'm going to do something different so that hopefully more of you will be able to play. I'll tell you about this idea at our next General Meeting to see what you think about a different, partner optional, format. But that's next year! Only two more months now until our Summer Ringer. I'm looking forward to golf in warmer weather and I hope you sign up with me so we can play together.

Learn How to Use the USGA Tournament Pairings Program

All members of the Pacific Women's Golf Association are invited to participate in an online training session on the Tournament Pairings Program (TPP). The TPP is part of the USGA's Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN) system which Jean Hayward and I have been using for the past 5 years for making scorecards, calculating Skins games, scoring our Invitational and running the SLO County Championship.

The training session is free and will be conduction on Tuesday, May 19 between 10am and 12pm. If you are interested, you may register at the following link: http://golfpwga.ghinclub.com/club/cal?&main.now=05-21-2009&main.invoker=%2Fclub%2Fcal%3F%26main.now%3D05-21-2009%26main.cal%3Dmonth&main.cal=month&main.id=151789&main.ctrl=eventmgr.detail&main.view=eventa.detail

It would be great to have more people familiar with the program and expand the knowledge base of our golf club. If you have questions, send me an email clare@tcsn.net or call me.

Thanks from Sue Lin

Sue Lin would like to thank all of the gals (and guys) that helped her in the recent DDM Tournament. She says that she couldn't have done it without all of their help and support. The following members were especially helpful: Jean Hayward, Gaye Mayfield, Joan Rogers, Cindy Bergin, Gerry and Ken Willett. And a big thanks to Eddie Anshen for providing the delicious continental breakfast on the first day of the Tournament.

Our club is so fortunate to have such helpful and giving members who are always ready to step in and carry part of the load whenever it's needed!

Tuesday Game - Ace of the Month

Today was Ace of the Month. The weather was not cooperative, though, and nearly everyone dropped out. However, there were two intrepid, hardy, plucky (some might say crazy), players that braved the rain, wind and a very s-l-o-w foursome ahead of them to finish.

Jean says that we'll redo Ace of the Month next week.

Couples Tournament - April 5

2nd Place: Gaye Mayfield & Mike Booth and Rene'e & Charlie Rahilly

CTP: Joan Rogers and Ralph McCornack

Check it out!

A 900 yard par 3 is in South Africa. The green is shaped like the African continent and completely surrounded by a sea of sand. You hit off a cliff over 1,400 feet above the hole and it takes 26 seconds for your ball to land. You have to take a helicopter to get to the hole. They post spotters around the green to let you know where your ball lands because you can’t possibly see it. Padraig Harrington is the only person to ever par it. He did it in a playoff after a recent tournament there. It is the 19th-hole and only used for playoffs. Watch him do it…with a ‘sandy’ no less.

A Note from Maureen

Dear Ladies ---

Writing my note to you each month reminds me how fast time passes. I just finished my thoughts for March and it's time to speak of April. Our weather has turned so lovely and after our cold winter the warm days are very welcome. April ushers in our beloved DDM tournament. I hope everyone has found a partner. I've got mine and I can't wait to tee it up with Grace on Thursday and Friday!

We have a little over a month left before our Grape Escape. If anyone is looking for a partner let me know so I can help you find the perfect person. We need volunteers to help that day (Friday, May 15th) so please let me know if you are not playing but would like to lend a hand. Your Invitational Committee is hard at work to make this year's event the best ever. I just received the tee prizes and they are really special. I hope everyone will be as pleased as I am.

Spring is definitely here so what better way to enjoy our beautiful days than to call three friends and make a tee time. I hope I'm part of your foursome this month!
